ECRM – where on earth to start?

There are a few clear benefits to eCRM. Firstly it removes confusion and uncertainty for marketers in recession. There are proven methods, and they generate testable results, so marketing budgets can be allocated on a strict ROI basis. Secondly, solid eCRM programmes build relationships with consumers that can be both brand engagement-based as well as transaction-based. For example we’ve taken a 14% click-through rate from McCain “brand resistors” and transformed it into a 63% click-through rate in ten months. The interesting thing for me, as someone constantly trying to work out what’s next, is that eCRM is a platform, not a channel. It’s definitely not email marketing, although it uses it. It’s not a technology, though it uses many technologies. What it is – and this is reflected in how it’s practised – is a principle. ECRM comprises understanding (data and analytics), insights (informs planning and ideas), relevance (segmentation, targeting, timing) and testing. Notice I didn’t use channels anywhere in there; I believe channels are…

EMERGENCY talks got underway in Italy yesterday as the country’s embattled Prime Minister belatedly decided to get to grips with the nation's weak financial position. GROWTH is weak and the UK’s economy may be contracting in this quarter, the monetary policy committee’s Martin Weale said yesterday.

What makes us happy?

Why are some people happy and others miserable? Well, without getting too scientific; it could be down to loads of things. It might be due to events, it could be your environment or maybe just genetics. But most probably it's a mixture of all three and other circumstances combined. So what really makes the difference between Morrissey and an overly-bubbly weather presenter? According to a recent article in the Economist, happiness is in your DNA and different races have different propensities for happiness. It used to be thought that the human personality was a blank slate, but scientists now think this is incorrect. They have studied identical twins and compared them to non-identical twins, deciding that many aspects of behaviour are heriditary. DNA examination has unearthed happy or misery genes; so happy people are simply blessed with a happy gene. Obviously, there are many factors involved in determining if you are happy; a job helps, money certainly ups the quotient and age also plays a…

EUROPEAN finance ministers meet in Brussels today to lay the groundwork for Sunday’s meeting of government leaders. They agreed to an additional summit on October 26th yesterday, after Germany and France said the European Union needs more time to seal a "global and ambitious" accord. The EU leaders are said to be accelerating talks on combining temporary and planned permanent rescue funds as of mid-2012, while scrapping a ceiling on bailout spending. JAPAN will sell about ¥800bn ($10.4bn) of additional government debt to the market this fiscal year to fund earthquake reconstruction, the Ministry of Finance said. Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda approved today a ¥12.1 third supplementary budget to fund rebuilding, which follows two packages totalling ¥6tn for quake relief. S&P outlined two ‘stressed economic scenarios’ in which Spain, Italy, Ireland and Portugal would be reduced by one or two levels. The first assumes low economic growth and double-dip recession, and add an interest-rate shock to the recession in the second. MARKETS: EUROPEAN shares are…
