Google buys Motorola Mobility in $12.5bn deal. Google is to buy mobile phone manufacturer Motorola Mobility for $12.5bn (£7.7bn), allowing it to mount a serious challenge to Apple as a technology manufacturer and take a bite out of the iPhone maker’s share of the smartphone market.

The accounting firm appointed Tim Cooper as director, at it’s Manchester office from Babcock International with over 20 years experience in the nuclear sector.

DELOITTE LLP

The accountancy firm appointed Eric Openshaw to lead its U.S. Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT) practice. In his new role, Openshaw will drive industry strategy, research, service development and delivery to the organization’s core TMT clients.

INSPARO ASSET MANAGEMENT

The firm appointed Andrew Dwiar to a specialist middle office role. Previously, Dwiar worked with the global credit team at Thames River Capital.

RBC CAPITAL MARKETS

The investment banking arm of Royal Bank of Canada appointed Harry Samuel as its chief executive, Europe. It also appointed David Thomas as the chief operating officer, Europe.

JEFFERIES GROUP INC

The company appointed Thomas Fetzer as a managing director in the global industrials group. Fetzer joins from UBS AG , where he worked for four years and was a managing director in the global industrials group.

HSBC PRIVATE BANK

The unit of Europe’s biggest bank HSBC Holdings appointed Simon Gordon as director in the ultra high net worth team. Gordon was earlier with Credit Suisse Private Bank.
